[Under Construction]

Hunting Conditions

There is somewhat of a variation in habitat and walking conditions as you move around the state of Arizona but for the most part you can count on a few things.

  1. It will be rocky so wear good boots with ankle support.
  2. It will probably be warm.  Warm to me is long sleeve shirt in the morning and T-shirt not long after the sun comes up.  Weather conditions vary of course but most days will be between 60 and 80 degrees.  I suggest wearing layers that can be removed and put in your game bag.  Also bring water along with you while hunting.  It can be 30 degrees in the morning and 65 degrees by 9AM.
  3. There may be cactus.  This varies significantly but be prepared with good leather boots.
  4. Cat Claw - a sticker bush is present throughout the state.  I wear pants with cordura facing.  The thicker the better.  Sometimes you have to make a tradeoff between cooler clothing and protective clothing.

Many people shy away from Mearns hunting because of the steep hills and rocky terrain.  In general Gambles and scalies are in habitat that is easier to walk in.  Please be realistic about your physical condition before booking a hunt.  If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask.  The better physical condition you are in the better your chance of moving more birds.

I will have emergency rain gear in my vehicle so there is really no need to bring anything like that along.

Things not to forget:

  1. Good boots (Preferably laced clear to the toes.  Boots without laces are too loose for the rocky terrain.)
  2. Protective pants
  3. Game vest (preferably with a water container system)
  4. Water container
  5. Good hat to shade the sun.
  6. Your sense of humor and love of the outdoors.
